# What is a chronic illness rider?

Updated October 8, 20263 sourcesCoverfolk team[Fact checked](/editorial-standards)

The short answer

It is an add on that lets you use part of your death benefit while you are alive if you have a long lasting illness. Usually you must be unable to do basic daily tasks like bathing or dressing.

A rider is an extra feature added to a policy. This one pays some of your death benefit early. Money paid now lowers what your family gets later.

To qualify, you usually cannot do certain daily tasks on your own. Alabama names bathing and dressing as examples. Other triggers can include a nursing home stay.

Alabama says policies may pay 25% to 100% of the death benefit early. You may get it monthly or in one sum.

Costs vary. Some insurers charge a small extra premium. Others charge nothing up front and take a cut when you use it.

Taxes and benefits can change. The IRS lets some of this money be tax free. Alabama warns that the money may affect Medicaid once you take it.

### Is the money taxed?

The IRS lets chronic illness benefits be tax free in many cases, up to a daily limit for some payment types.
