# What is the contestability period?

Updated October 8, 20263 sourcesCoverfolk team[Fact checked](/editorial-standards)

The short answer

It is the first two years of a policy. During that time, the insurer can look closely at a claim and deny it if your application had wrong answers they relied on.

When you apply, you answer questions about your health and habits. The insurer uses those answers to decide your price.

If you die in the first two years, the insurer can review your application. If you left out something important, they may deny the claim.

After two years, the insurer generally must pay. Exceptions include unpaid premiums or false statements.

Most policies also have a suicide clause for the first two years. In that case, benefits are usually limited to the premiums paid.

The best way to protect your family is simple. Answer every question honestly.

* Lasts two years in most policies
* Insurer can review the application
* Claims may take longer in this window
* Honest answers keep your family safe

## More questions

### Does the clock restart if I reinstate a lapsed policy?

It can. Reinstating a policy may restart the contestability period.

### Will my family still get money if the claim is denied?

If a claim is denied in the contestable period, premiums are generally refunded.

### What if I forgot something small?

Call your insurer and fix it. It is better to correct it now than to risk a problem later.
