# Is there cremation insurance?

Updated October 8, 20264 sourcesCoverfolk team[Fact checked](/editorial-standards)

The short answer

Yes, in a way. Funeral insurance, also called funeral expense life insurance, can be bought to pay for a cremation, and any life insurance payout can also be used for it.

Washington State says funeral insurance is life insurance you buy to pay for your funeral or cremation. Payouts are often $5,000 to $25,000.

With standard funeral insurance, the money goes to your beneficiary. They can use it for the cremation, bills, or debts.

Pre need insurance pays the funeral provider you pick. It can lock in today's prices. Texas warns it can cost more than other life insurance, and you might pay more in premiums than it pays out.

Cremation is now more common than burial. The NFDA projected a 63.4% cremation rate in the US for 2025.

The FTC Funeral Rule says no law requires a casket for cremation. A funeral home that offers cremation must offer a simple container, and you can choose direct cremation.

* Standard funeral or final expense insurance
* Pre need funeral insurance
* Regular term or whole life
* Savings set aside for final costs
