# How much life insurance do I need?

The short answer

Enough to cover what your family would lose if you died: your pay for the years they need it, your debts, your home loan, school costs and your funeral. Then take away the savings and coverage you already have.

Start with one question. How would your family pay the bills if you were gone? The answer is your number.

Add up what they would need. Count the pay you bring home and how many years they would need it. Add your mortgage, other debts, college plans and funeral costs.

Now subtract what you already have. Savings, a policy from work and any other coverage all lower the amount you need to buy.

Some people use a quick rule, like 10 times your yearly pay. It is easy, but it can miss things. It does not count your savings or the work a stay at home parent does.

Check your number again when life changes. A new baby, a new house or a new job can change what your family needs.
