# Is IUL a scam?

Updated October 8, 20263 sourcesCoverfolk team[Fact checked](/editorial-standards)

The short answer

No. Indexed universal life is a real, legal kind of permanent life insurance. But it is complex, its growth is capped, and it can lapse if it is not funded enough, so it is a poor fit for many people.

IUL is a type of universal life insurance. Its cash value growth is tied to a stock index, like the S&P 500.

Most IUL policies have a floor, often 0%. That means a bad year in the index will not give you negative interest. But a cap limits how much you can earn in a good year.

Fees and the cost of insurance come out of the cash value. NerdWallet says these fees can rise over time. If growth is low, you may need to pay more to keep the policy.

Agents show charts called illustrations. These are guesses, not promises. You could earn less than shown.

Policygenius says IUL may fit wealthy people with complex estate plans. For most others, it says IUL is not worth the cost. Term life or whole life may fit better.

* What is the cap and participation rate?
* Can the cap go down later?
* What fees come out each year?
* What premium keeps the policy from lapsing?
* Can I see a history of actual results, not just projections?

## More questions

### Can I lose money in an IUL?

The floor protects against negative index credit. But fees, loans, and low payments can still shrink your cash value.

### Can I cancel if I change my mind?

Yes, during the free look period. In Texas it is at least 10 to 20 days, with a full refund.
