# Is life insurance worth it?

The short answer

It is worth it if someone depends on your income or the work you do at home. If no one depends on you and your final bills are covered, you may not need it.

The main job of life insurance is to protect the people who count on you. It can replace your pay if you die.

It also helps if you do unpaid work at home. Your family may need to pay for child care or other help.

It can pay for a funeral, pay off a mortgage or other debts, or help with college.

The Insurance Information Institute says that if you have no dependents and enough money for final bills, you do not need life insurance.

Term life is the lowest cost choice for most families. A small policy is better than none, and you can add more later.

* You have a spouse who relies on your pay
* You have kids at home
* You have a mortgage or cosigned debt
* You care for a family member
* You want your funeral paid for

## More questions

### Is the life insurance from my job enough?

It may not be. It is often one to two times your pay, and you may lose it if you leave the job.

### Do I need it after retirement?

Maybe less. If debts are paid and kids support themselves, a small policy for final costs may be enough.
