# What is IUL (indexed universal life)?

Updated October 8, 20262 sourcesCoverfolk team[Fact checked](/editorial-standards)

The short answer

IUL is permanent life insurance with cash value that grows based on a stock market index, like the S&P 500. It has a floor that limits losses and a cap that limits gains.

Your money is not put straight into the stock market. The insurer credits your cash value based on how an index does.

The floor is the least you can earn, often 0%. So a bad year does not cut your cash value because of the index.

The cap is the most you can earn. If the index goes up 12% and your cap is 10%, you get no more than 10%. Caps can change.

Fees still come out. Costs can rise over time. If growth is low and you pay too little, the policy can lapse unless you pay more.

The charts an agent shows you are estimates, not promises. Ask what is guaranteed and what is not.

* Floor: the least you can earn, often 0%
* Cap: the most you can earn
* Participation rate: the share of the gain you get
* Fees can lower your cash value

## More questions

### Can I lose money in an IUL?

The index floor protects you from market drops, but fees and policy costs can still shrink your cash value.

### Who is IUL for?

Someone who wants lifelong coverage, can keep paying for years and will watch the policy closely.

### Is IUL the same as whole life?

No. Whole life grows at a rate the insurer sets. IUL growth follows an index, with limits.
