The short answer

Most people in their 40s need term life to cover the mortgage, kids and income. Price goes up faster after 40, so do not wait.

Many people do not have enough. LIMRA's 2026 study says about 92 million adults, or 38%, say they need life insurance or more of it.

Prices start to climb in your 40s. MoneyGeek shows $500,000 of 20 year term for a 40 year old man at $59 a month and $90 at 45, nonsmoker, average health (updated September 22, 2026).

If you have a work plan, it may not be enough. Your own term policy stays with you if you change jobs.

## Tips that help

* Count the years left on your mortgage and pick a term that matches.
* Look at college costs if you have kids.
* Buy your own policy so it does not end with a job.
* Apply now. Waiting a few years can raise the price a lot.
* Do not cancel an old policy until a new one is in force.

## Coverage that fits

## Common questions

Is it too late to get term at 40?

No. Term is easy to get in your 40s. MoneyGeek lists 20 and 30 year terms at age 40.

Should I replace an old policy?

Be careful. The NAIC says compare both, and do not cancel your current policy until you get the new one.

How much does health matter?

A lot. At 40, MoneyGeek shows $500,000 of 20 year term for a man at $35 a month in the best class and $66 in standard, nonsmoker.
