The short answer

Yes, a stay at home parent needs life insurance. A term policy can pay for child care, help at home and time off work for the other parent.

Many kids have a parent at home. The Census found that almost one quarter of children under 15 in married couple families had a stay at home mother. Only 1% had a stay at home father.

If the parent at home dies, the family still has to pay for child care, rides, meals and more. The working parent may need to cut hours too.

Term life is a low cost way to cover those years. Pick a term that runs until your youngest child is grown.

## Tips that help

* List what you do each week and what it would cost to pay someone.
* Match the term to your youngest child's age.
* Your spouse's job plan may not cover you. Check.
* Buy your own policy so it does not depend on a job.
* Name your spouse or a trust as beneficiary.

## Common questions

Can I get life insurance with no income?

Often yes. Ask the insurer how it sets the amount for a spouse who does not earn a paycheck.

How much should I get?

Add up years of child care and home help until your youngest is grown. The NAIC says to base it on needs that go on after you die.

Is term or whole life better for me?

Term usually. The NAIC says term gives lower cost coverage for a set time, which fits the years your kids are young.
