The short answer

Most working moms and wives should have their own term policy, not just coverage through work or a spouse. Women also pay less than men at the same age.

There is a gap. LIMRA's 2026 study found 49% of women own life insurance, compared with 55% of men.

Women often earn less, but their income still matters. BLS says women working full time earned 83% of men's median weekly pay in 2024. Their unpaid care work also costs money to replace.

Women usually pay less for the same coverage. MoneyGeek shows $500,000 of 20 year term for a 30 year old woman at $32 a month vs $38 for a man, nonsmoker, average health (updated September 22, 2026).

## Tips that help

* Get your own policy. Do not rely only on your spouse's.
* Count care work, not just pay, when you pick an amount.
* Buy before a pregnancy if you can, so you are not waiting on health checks.
* Update beneficiaries after marriage, divorce or a new baby.
* Keep a policy that does not depend on your job.
