Nationally, a funeral with viewing and burial had a median cost of $8,300 (2023, NFDA).

## Medicaid and burial money

Up to $1,500 each for you and your spouse in clearly marked burial funds is not counted. That $1,500 is lowered by burial insurance, cash value life insurance that is excluded, and irrevocable burial trusts or preneed contracts. Fully paid burial spaces are not counted and do not lower it. An irrevocable preneed contract that cannot be sold is not counted.

## Prepaid funeral plans

The Division of Professional Licensing regulates preneed funeral contracts. All money you pay must go into a trust at a Utah trust company within 10 business days for cash. You can cancel only for a serious breach, if the funeral home cannot deliver, or under terms written in the contract. The contract must say how your money is refunded.
