The American Cancer Society says about 18.6 million people in the US were cancer survivors as of January 1, 2025. Many of them can buy life insurance.

Insurers look at the type and stage of your cancer, when you were diagnosed, when treatment ended, and if it came back. The longer you are in remission, the better. If you already have a policy and you were rated higher, you can ask to be looked at again. Early prostate cancer often needs at least 12 months in remission for that. Early breast or colon cancer often needs at least two years.

Pick the right company. Policygenius names Symetra as a top choice for people with a history of cancer. It also says Transamerica is not a good fit. NerdWallet says Guardian may give standard rates to some cancer survivors 70 and under.

## What insurers look at

* The type of cancer
* The stage when it was found
* When you were diagnosed
* When your last treatment ended
* Whether it came back
* Any lasting problems from cancer or treatment

## Coverage that may fit

**Term life**

Possible after some time in remission. NerdWallet gives the example of some companies waiting two years after final treatment for breast cancer.

**Simplified issue**

No exam, but you answer health questions. Coverage often reaches about $50,000, and you can still be turned down for serious conditions. Rules on cancer vary by company. We could not verify a set wait time for simplified issue.

**Guaranteed issue**

For people who cannot pass health questions. There is no exam and no health questions, coverage tops out around $25,000, and the price is high. Mutual of Omaha sells it to people 45 and older, per Policygenius. Most have a waiting period, often 2 years, before the full amount pays for a natural death (Policygenius, graded death benefit). Final expense is the main option if you are in treatment now.

## Common questions

How long after treatment can I apply?

It depends on the cancer. NerdWallet gives the example of two years after final treatment for breast cancer at some companies.

Can I get coverage while in treatment?

Current cancer patients can usually only get final expense insurance.

Can I lower my rate later?

Possibly. You may ask your insurer to look at your rate again after time in remission.
