# Life insurance for loggers

Logging is one of the most dangerous jobs in the country. BLS counts about 40,000 logging jobs. Falling trees and limbs, steep ground, and heavy machines are part of the day.

## Why it matters

In 2023, logging workers had a fatal injury rate of 98.9 per 100,000 full time workers. The rate for all workers was 3.5. That is about 28 times higher.

About 3 in 10 loggers are self employed. If you work for yourself, there is no work life plan unless you buy one. Life insurance can help your family if the worst happens.

* BLS says logging workers have one of the highest rates of deadly injuries of all jobs.
* About 30 percent of logging workers are self employed. BLS benefits counts leave out the self employed, so any coverage is up to you.

## What an insurer may ask you

Have these ready. Being honest up front gets you a real price and avoids problems at claim time.

* Your exact job, like faller, equipment operator, or truck driver
* Hand felling or machine felling
* Whether you are self employed
* Your age, health, and tobacco use
* Your driving record

## Common questions

Can loggers get life insurance?

Yes. Your job may raise the price. Insurers ask what you do in the woods.

Does running a machine cost less than hand felling?

It may. Insurers often ask about your exact tasks.

I own my logging business. Do I have any coverage?

Only if you bought it. There is no employer plan when you work for yourself.

Should I tell the insurer my real job?

Yes. Always answer the application truthfully. A wrong answer can cause problems when your family files a claim.
