## Why it matters

In 2023, auto techs and mechanics had a fatal injury rate of 8.1 per 100,000 full time workers. The rate for all workers was 3.5. That is more than two times higher.

About 15 percent of auto techs are self employed. If you own your shop, there is no work life plan unless you buy one.

* BLS says auto techs have one of the highest rates of injury and illness of all jobs. About 15 percent are self employed.
* Life insurance from work usually ends when you leave the job. A basic work plan often pays only one or two times your yearly pay.

## What an insurer may ask you

Have these ready. Being honest up front gets you a real price and avoids problems at claim time.

* Shop work or roadside work
* Whether you own the shop
* Any racing or high speed testing
* Your age, health, and tobacco use

## Common questions

Can mechanics get life insurance?

Yes. Your age, health, and tobacco use matter most.

I own my shop. Do I have coverage?

Only if you bought it. There is no employer plan when you own the business.

Does my dealership give me coverage?

It might. Work coverage usually ends when you leave. A policy you own does not.

Do I need to mention racing?

Yes, if you race. Insurers ask about risky hobbies and can charge more for them.
