# Life insurance for military spouses (FSGLI)

Updated October 8, 2026[Fact checked](/editorial-standards)

The short answer

FSGLI covers the spouse of a service member with full time SGLI for up to $100,000. Each child is covered for $10,000 at no cost.

FSGLI is for spouses and children of people with full time SGLI. Your own job does not matter. You can be a civilian, retired, or serving yourself.

If you are a civilian spouse, you are covered on your own. The cost comes out of your service member's pay. If you are a military spouse married on or after January 2, 2013, you are not covered on your own. Your service member must sign you up in milConnect.

Spouse coverage can be up to $100,000. It cannot be more than your service member's SGLI. The price goes up as you get older. Children are covered for $10,000 for free until age 18, or longer for full time students or children with a disability.

FSGLI can end if your service member leaves the military, you divorce, or they drop coverage. You then have 120 days to switch it to a private permanent policy with a participating company. Then you pay the bill yourself.
