# Final expense insurance for veterans

Updated October 8, 2026[Fact checked](/editorial-standards)

The short answer

VA burial benefits pay part of the cost of a veteran's burial, but not all of it. A small private final expense policy can cover the funeral home bills that VA does not.

VA help is real, but it has limits. For a death not service connected on or after October 1, 2026, VA can pay up to $1,032 for burial and $1,032 for a plot. VA says these payments cover some of the costs.

A national cemetery gives a free gravesite, headstone, opening and closing of the grave, and a flag. But VA says anything you get from a funeral home is paid by the family. That can include the casket, services, and cremation.

A private cemetery may charge fees to set or place the free VA headstone. Ask the cemetery about these costs before you plan.

A small whole life policy can fill that gap. Veterans with a service connected rating can look at VALife first. It covers up to $40,000 with no health questions. Others can compare private final expense quotes. Prices vary by age and health.

## Common questions

Is the VA burial allowance enough to pay for a funeral?

VA says it helps cover some of the costs. Funeral home items are paid by the family, so many veterans add a small policy.

Should I get VALife or a private final expense policy?

If you have a service connected rating, VALife needs no health questions. Full coverage starts after 2 years. A private policy may fit if you do not qualify for VALife.

Can I plan my VA burial ahead of time?

Yes. VA will tell you in advance if you can be buried in a national cemetery. You can apply for this decision before you need it.
