What happens in a life insurance phone interview?

Updated October 8, 20263 sourcesCoverfolk teamFact checked
The short answer

An agent or the insurer calls to check your application. The call usually takes 15 to 30 minutes and covers your health, habits, job, and money.

The call checks that your application is right. It helps stop fraud and helps the insurer set your price.

First, you confirm basic facts. That includes your name, birth date, height, weight, income, and how much coverage you want.

Next come health questions. You will be asked about past diagnoses, treatments, medicines, and your family's health history.

Then you will be asked about risky hobbies, like flying, racing, or scuba diving. You will also be asked about your job, assets, and debts.

Be honest. Insurers check prescription records and the MIB database. Wrong answers can lead to a denied claim later.

  • Names and phone numbers of your doctors
  • Dates of surgeries and diagnoses in the last 10 years
  • List of medicines you take
  • Weight changes over 10 pounds in the past year
  • Beneficiary names and birth dates
