Does a DOT physical or CDL medical card help me get life insurance?

Updated October 8, 20264 sourcesCoverfolk teamFact checked
The short answer

Not directly. A DOT medical card shows you are fit to drive a truck. Life insurers do their own health checks.

The DOT exam has one job. FMCSA says it checks that you are healthy enough to safely drive a commercial truck. A medical examiner on the FMCSA National Registry does it.

FMCSA says a DOT card is good for up to 24 months. The examiner may give a shorter card to watch a health problem, like high blood pressure.

Life insurance is a different test. Texas says insurers often use a medical exam and ask about your health, job, and habits.

Your driving record counts too. Policygenius says insurers pull a report of your driving history going back up to seven years. Tickets, wrecks, and DUIs can raise your price or lead to a no.

Be honest about any condition your DOT examiner is watching. Policygenius says insurers check your prescription history. Answers that do not match can slow things down.

  • A list of your medicines
  • Names and phone numbers of your doctors
  • Your driving record facts
  • Dates of any health problems

More questions

Do I still need a life insurance exam?

It depends on the policy. Some policies ask health questions with no exam. Guaranteed issue policies ask no health questions.

Will tickets on my CDL raise my price?

They can. Policygenius says risky driving like speeding, wrecks, or DUIs can raise rates or lead to a decline.
