What is guaranteed issue and a graded death benefit?

Updated October 8, 20263 sourcesCoverfolk teamFact checked
The short answer

Guaranteed issue life insurance accepts you without health questions or an exam. A graded death benefit means the policy pays less if you die from natural causes in the first few years.

Guaranteed issue is usually a small whole life policy. Many are sold to people ages 45 to 85, and some only to ages 50 to 80.

Coverage is small. It can start around $2,000, and many companies cap it around $25,000 to $50,000.

The waiting period is often one to three years. If you die of natural causes in that time, your family may get back the premiums paid instead of the full amount.

If death is from an accident, many policies pay the full amount right away.

These policies cost more for the coverage you get. They make the most sense if your health keeps you from cheaper coverage.

  • No exam, no health questions
  • Small coverage amounts
  • Waiting period of about 1 to 3 years
  • Accidents often paid in full
  • Higher price per dollar of coverage
