Who pays for a funeral if there is no money or insurance?

Updated October 8, 20264 sourcesCoverfolk teamFact checked
The short answer

Help may come from the county, Social Security, or the VA. The amounts are small, so ask about low cost choices too.

Some counties help when no one can pay. For example, in Cook County, Illinois, the medical examiner can help if the family cannot pay within 30 days. The county checks first. If approved, it pays only for cremation.

Social Security pays a one time $255 to a spouse, or to some children if there is no spouse. You must apply within 2 years.

For Veterans, the VA gives a grave in a national cemetery, a headstone, and a flag at no cost to the family. Some families can also get a burial allowance.

You can spend less. The FTC says you can buy only what you want. Direct cremation and right away burial do not need embalming.

  • The county medical examiner or coroner
  • Social Security at 1-800-772-1213
  • The VA, if the person was a Veteran
  • Two or more funeral homes for price lists

More questions

Can I get the $255 if I am not the spouse?

Maybe. If there is no spouse, Social Security says some children can get it, like children 17 or younger.

Is there a cheaper choice than a full funeral?

Yes. The FTC says direct cremation and right away burial do not need embalming. Ask for prices by phone.
