The short answer

Yes, but it is small. Social Security pays a one time $255 to a surviving spouse, or to some children if there is no spouse.

The payment is $255. Social Security says it is meant to help when a spouse or parent dies.

A spouse who lived with the person may qualify. A spouse who lived apart may also qualify if they can get benefits on that person's record.

If there is no spouse, some children may qualify. This includes children 17 or younger, children 18 or 19 in grades K to 12 full time, and children of any age who became disabled by age 21.

You must apply within 2 years of the death. You can apply online with a my Social Security account, or call 1-800-772-1213.

You may not need to report the death. Social Security says the funeral home usually tells them.
