VALife for veterans: the $40,000 limit and the 2 year wait

September 25, 20261 sourcesCoverfolk teamFact checked
The short answer

VALife is whole life insurance from the VA. It covers up to $40,000, and full coverage starts 2 years after you apply. If you die in the first 2 years, your family gets back the premiums you paid plus interest.

VALife is open to veterans with a service connected disability rating, even 0%, if you are 80 or younger. You do not need a medical exam.

The catch is the wait. Your full coverage starts 2 years after you apply. You pay premiums during that time.

The amount is also capped at $40,000, in $10,000 steps. For a lot of families, that pays for a funeral and some bills, but not a home or years of income.

Many veterans keep VALife and add a private policy on top. Some private plans start coverage on day one if you qualify, and some go much higher than $40,000.

Coverfolk is not part of the VA. We connect you with licensed agents who can compare private plans side by side with what the VA offers.
