What to know

Final expense is also called burial insurance. Triple-I describes it as a small whole life policy, often $5,000 to $25,000. You may get it after answering a few health questions. It is made to pay for a funeral and last bills.

Term life gives a larger amount for a set time. It is often cheaper per dollar of coverage than permanent plans. But Texas says most insurers sell term only up to about age 70 or 80. And if you outlive the term, it pays nothing.

Watch the early years on final expense. New York says some senior plans pay only premiums back, or a small graded amount, in the first two or three years. Texas also warns that total premiums can end up higher than the payout. If you are healthy and still have years of need, term may give you more for your money.

Pick Final expense if
  • You are older and want coverage that does not run out.
  • You only need a small amount for funeral costs.
  • Your health makes a full exam policy hard to get.
Pick Term life if
  • You need a large payout to replace income or pay a mortgage.
  • Your need ends at a known time, like when kids grow up.
  • You are healthy and want the most coverage for each dollar.
