Cremation for the Indigent

Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner. Family pays $150 if on SNAP, Medicaid, TANF, or SSI. Others pay $475. Income must be at or under the federal poverty line. No viewing or service. Call 305 545 2400. Official page

Medicaid and burial money

You and your spouse can each set aside up to $2,500 for burial and it is not counted. This $2,500 is not cut by burial insurance or an irrevocable plan. An irrevocable prepaid burial contract is not counted at all. A burial trust set up with a funeral home is treated the same way.

Prepaid funeral plans

The Division of Funeral, Cemetery, and Consumer Services (Department of Financial Services) licenses preneed sellers. Sellers must put 70% of the price for services in trust. For goods it is 30% of the price or 110% of wholesale cost, whichever is more. You get 100% back if you cancel in writing within 30 days. Services can be canceled any time for 100% of what you paid. A state fund can help if a seller fails.
